
Canadian National Railroad acquired the Duluth,
Missabe and Iron Railway (DM&IR) as part of its recent
acquisition in May 2004, of the rail and marine holdings
of Great Lakes Transportation LLC (GLT). The Duluth, Missabe
and Iron Range Railway (DMIR) is the largest iron ore handling
railroad in North America.
With 212 miles of track, the primary mission of the Missabe
is to move ore from Minnesota's taconite plants located
on Minnesota's taconite plants located on Minnesota's Mesabi
Iron Range to DM&IR dock facilities at either Duluth
or Two Harbors, or to connecting railroads at Superior,
Wisconsin. From the Missabe, ore is transported either by
lake vessel or unit train to steel mills in the West, East,
South or Mdwest. Other commodities carried by the Missabe
include limestone, clay, coal, and wood products.
Granite Gear was founded
in 1986. The company provides innovative products for the
outdoor enthusiast. For those enjoing the BWCA, the Superior
Hiking Trail, or climbing Mt. Everest, Granite Gear builds
the products that ensure a great trip. Granite Gear employs
20 people and will continue to grow as a quality supplier
in the Outdoor Marketplace.
NorthShore Mining was the first taconite
mining processing facility in North America when it opened
as Reserve Mining in 1955. Cleveland Cliffs Inc. acquired
Northshore Mining in 1994. Northshore currently produces
approximately 4.9 million tons of taconite and employs over
500 employees between the mine in Babbitt and the milling
operations in Silver Bay.
Krech Ojard & Associates provides full
engineering and architectural services including civil,
structural, mechanical and marine engineering as well as
an affiliation with North Shore Track Services. This combination
of professionals creates a coprehensive and streamlined
ability to perform services for any public or private entity.
Lousiana-Pacific produces 150 million square
feet of house siding and trim each year. This plant opened
in Two Harbors in 1985 and employs 140 people. In addition,
the facility hires 100 contract loggers to bring aspen logs
from within a 200-mile radius of Two Harbors. The site was
the first LP facility dedicated to producing engineered
wood siding which is shipped to distributors and retailers
around the world.
Minde Log Construction Inc. was established in 1983. The company builds premium quality
custom log homes, does commercial projects and will add
log accents on any type of building.
Northshore Manufacturing, Inc. manufactures custom fabrication of handlers and attachments
(grapples) for the waste garbage, material recovery facilities
(MRF), transfer station, scrap recycling and material handling
industry.
Stanley/LaBounty In 1992, the Stanley Works
purchased LaBounty Manufacturing Inc, the global market
leader for mounted, non-impact attachments serving general
contractors, scrap metal recyclers, demolition experts and
heavy construction. Today, the design and innovation of
attachments with high quality, durability and lasting performance.
LaBounty, located in Two Harbors Industrial Park, is a business
unit of The Hydraulic Tools Product group of the Stanley
Works.
Two Harbors Machine Shop Inc., established
in 1968, employs 87 employees and is a modern, full service
fabricating and machining facility. Two Harbors Machine
has a 48,000 sq ft machining and fabricating site in Two
Harbors Industrial Park and a 14,000 sq ft shop in downtown
Two Harbors. In 1977, Two Harbors Machine began manufacturing
Serco Log Loaders and currently produces several models
with lift capaities ranging from 2,000 to 32,000 pounds.
The North Shore Business Enterprise Center provides businesses light industrial space to locate and
grow. The 20,000 square foot facility has up to 17,000 square
feet of leaseable space at competitive rates. As on site
manager, ample parking, fully sprinklered building, handicapped
accessibility, with modern offices and 3,000 square feet
of common area that include conference rooms, lunch rooms
and washroom facilities allows businesses the production
space needed plus room to grow.
Two Harbors provides a central contact source to assist
business developers and entrepeneurs in matters of building
space and land availability, zoning, funding sources, utility
needs and loan packaging. The Two Harbors Development Commission
manages a local revolving loan fund, 60 acres of industrial
land including 15 acres of "Tax Free" zones.
Sure-Fab Established in 2002, is located in the Two Harbors industrial Park and employs 25 people. Sure-Fab manufactures components for O.E.M.'s to their specifications. Some of the markets they produce components for the scrap and demolition industries,logging,material handling,rail grinding and the heavy-duty truck lift industries.
